Insurance guidance for Guard & Reserve

Moving between civilian life and active orders can change how your vehicles, home, and life coverage are used. Review your coverage before each set of orders, not after.

The moments that matter

Review coverage at each turning point.

  1. 01

    When orders arrive

Tell your insurers if a vehicle will be stored, a home will sit empty, or someone else will drive or live there. Changes in use can affect coverage.

  2. 02

    While activated

The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) provides certain protections during qualifying active service. Confirm what applies to you before changing or cancelling a policy.

  3. 03

    Back to civilian work

Review employer life and disability benefits alongside SGLI so you know what continues and what stops when orders end.

A clearer conversation

Questions, answered.

01Am I covered by SGLI as a Guard or Reserve member?

Members of the Ready Reserve and National Guard are generally eligible for SGLI. Verify your coverage amount at va.gov/life-insurance.

02Can I suspend auto insurance while I am activated?

Do not assume so. Loan terms, state registration rules, and the risk to a stored vehicle still matter. Ask your insurer about storage options.
