Insurance guidance for Military Spouses
Spouses often manage the policies during moves and deployments. Make sure you can act on each policy, and know which coverage is in your own name.
The moments that matter
Review coverage at each turning point.
- 01
Before a deployment
Ask each insurer to list you as a named insured or authorized person, and keep a power of attorney with your policy records.
- 02
During a PCS
Update the garaging address, check how belongings are covered in transit and storage, and confirm renters or homeowners coverage starts at the new address.
- 03
Your own protection
Family SGLI (FSGLI) may cover a spouse, but the amount is limited. Review whether it matches your household needs.

A clearer conversation
Questions, answered.
01How much life coverage does FSGLI provide for a spouse?
FSGLI spouse coverage is available up to $100,000 and cannot exceed the servicemember’s SGLI amount. Confirm current details at va.gov/life-insurance.
02Can I change a policy while my spouse is deployed?
Only if you are authorized on it. Ask each insurer what documents they require before deployment begins.
